An exhibition of new paintings by
Richard Silva

Wearing jeans and a plaid shirt splattered with paint, a baseball cap he painted on purpose and kneepads, Richard Silva works on a canvas lying on the floor. He says that he was never one for working on an easel. Dozens of paintings line the walls of his studio. "If I paint a bottle, I don't want it to be a bottle; I don't like to be specific. I like to embody other meaning in there and make you think," Silva says.

He starts a new piece on a large canvas; Silva says he has to put something down, even a piece of cardboard to break up the white space. "It gets me into the painting - It gives me somewhere to start." He brushes on black paint adding red and ocher. He swipes across the black paint with a crumpled piece of cardboard and draws designs with the brush handle.
